SCI & Coconut Derived Surfactants

This ingredient is probably my favourite ‘all rounder surfactant’ that I use to make a sulfate free product that offers loads of lather.  It’s a must in your store cupboard if you craft lathery things!

It has never been more popular than now to use Coconut based products, and SCI has big tick on the palm free list!  It also offers loads of lather, and we now stock several forms so you can select the correct form for your product.

As we use these commercially manufactured ingredients to craft products by hand, some forms are more manageable than others.  The SCI chips are quite difficult to use for solid products unless they are ground down first, but they excel when making a liquid shampoo, hand or body wash and facial cleansers.  The SCI Powder and SCS Needles are excellent for solid shampoo bars and cleansing bars – so much easier to manipulate.

It’s important that you include some Cocamidopropyl betaine (an amphoteric surfactant) to enable the SCI to solublise in the formula.  You can learn more about the solubilisation of SCI on this PUB MED LINK.  You can also learn more about surfactants on our surfactant website page and in our Bubble Bubble Toil & Confusion Book.

SCI is available in a range of forms and we currently stock Chips and Powder.  SCS is another solid coconut derived ingredient useful for solid bars and cleansers (and it’s also Palm Oil Free!).  We search long and hard to ensure we can offer Palm Oil free ingredients, and though this is not always possible, we also stock Hostapon Paste and a PALM FREE Cocamidopropyl betaine too which are invaluable in your surfactant store cupboard!

Though SCI requires an amphoteric to solublise, the beauty of our SCI chips is that you can hydrate these by just soaking them overnight to make your formulation easier to produce and less heating is required to make an amazing liquid shampoo.

To make it easier to start learning to use these fab surfactants, we have formulated several DIY Kits using them:
