{"id":1255,"date":"2020-06-11T10:49:41","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T02:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/?p=1255"},"modified":"2020-06-11T11:05:09","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T03:05:09","slug":"the-fragrance-triangle-balancing-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/index.php\/uncategorized\/the-fragrance-triangle-balancing-act\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fragrance Triangle Balancing Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my favourite quotes about scent is &#8220;<em>The sense of smell is the hair trigger of memory<\/em>&#8221; (Mary Stewart), and this is so true!\u00a0 Fragrance has the power to move us, in both a positive and negative way.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>There is nothing that wakes memories so vividly and quickly as scent.<\/em> (MS)\u00a0 Aroma can have an incredible impact on our state of mind \u2013 scents can transport you to a specific place in your past, or person in your life.\u00a0 Cinnamon and apple can remind you of your Grandmother baking an apple pie in her kitchen, or an aftershave of your Father or a past love.<\/p>\n<p>Scents can smell different in different products and your own skin&#8217;s chemistry can have a major influence on scents. Even your diet can affect the scents you use or wear.\u00a0 One perfume can smell wonderful on you and completely differently on someone else!<\/p>\n<p>Most fragrances are a combination of many aromatic ingredients.\u00a0 These are derived from both natural substances and from man-made materials.\u00a0 This is due to a variety of reasons including availability, cost, scent profile and ethical.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Types of Ingredients<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Naturally derived ingredients<\/strong> include essential oils, absolutes and resinous substances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1297 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Blog-FO-Triangle-Strip-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Blog-FO-Triangle-Strip-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Blog-FO-Triangle-Strip-1-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Blog-FO-Triangle-Strip-1-600x235.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Essential Oils<\/strong> are produced from plant materials by cold pressing or distillation.\u00a0 All of these vary in aroma, colour and price depending on the drop and the season.\u00a0 Remember, not all plant materials can offer a yield of essential oils (ie strawberries, apple, oatmeal).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aromatic Essential Oils include:<\/strong> \u00a0 Lavender, Cedarwood, Lemongrass, Geranium, Orange.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Absolutes<\/strong> are the aromatic material from plants from which you cannot produce an essential oil for various reasons. They may be too viscous, or the material too fragile to be processed. They are very high in cost as they are labour intensive and the yield is extremely small.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Absolutes include:<\/strong> \u00a0 Rose, Jasmine, Black Currant, Narcissus, Tuberose, Violet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aromatic Resins<\/strong> (saps) are materials which are oozed from a plant when the outer layer of the plant is cut. They are thick and sticky and usually harden into a solid \u2018lump\u2019. They are usually base notes and last a long time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resins include:<\/strong> \u00a0 Benzoin, Oakmoss, Myrrh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAN MADE ingredients <\/strong>are usually referred to as \u2018aroma chemicals\u2019 and are manufactured to offer a range of attributes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1299 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Blog-FO-Triangle-Strip-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Blog-FO-Triangle-Strip-2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Blog-FO-Triangle-Strip-2-300x117.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Blog-FO-Triangle-Strip-2-600x234.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These are often versions of the natural, expensive aroma material and are able to be produced with a consistency of odour and colour, and of course are less expensive.\u00a0 These ingredients are like an artist\u2019s coloured pencil box, all sorts of different colours and applications in the aroma palette!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manufactured Aromatic ingredients include<\/strong>:\u00a0 Vanillin, citral, linalyl acetate &#8211; and at least 5000 more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Just like our healthy food triangle, perfumery uses a triangle to balance the aromas. These are the sprint runners of the fragrance \u2013 they are arrive first, but are spent quickly.<br \/>\n<strong>Top notes include:<\/strong> Citrus and light aroma chemicals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Middle or Heart notes<\/strong> last longer than top notes, and sometimes act as a bridge (like Lavender). They tend to represent the \u201cheart\u201d or character of the fragrance. They usually represent the character of the fragrance, and last throughout its life.<br \/>\n<strong>Middle or Heart Notes include:<\/strong> Florals, spices and fruits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Base notes<\/strong> are the marathon runners of the fragrance, they arrive last, but have staying power! They are also known as the drydown or bottom notes. They are the deep, base notes that everything \u2018sits\u2019 on.
